Smith Family Line
The Smith line is the family of my ancestor Martha Smith who marrried John Logan, one of the 3 Logan's to emigrate to South Australia from Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. I got intrigued by Martha's line as I could not find her mother's name for a number of years. Her father, Edward was on her marriage certificate, but her mother eluded me for along time, until I finally tracked down Martha's birth certificate and found her mother was Mary Dunk.
Edward SMITH born c1804 at Bettshanger, Kent, England married c1826 in Kent, Mary DUNK born c1808 at Northbourne, Kent, England. Edward was variously an ag lab and a baliff in Bettshanger and he and Mary had 10 children before they emigrated to South Australia on the "Norman" arriving in 1855 with the 4 youngest children, James, John, Martha & Charles. Subsequently 4 of the 6 older children emigrated to South Australia and settled in various farming districts, married and multiplied such that I have over 650 direct descendents that I or other researchers have documented so far. This is a prolific and hardy family that seemed to have thrived in the frountiers of the SA pastoral and farming industry, no doubt enduring the many hardships as well. Consequently the family has many connections within South Australia and I hope you find your connection through the information in the links below.
